The
Yurok Tribe of California announced the purchase of 22,237 acres.
The tribe bought the 34 square-mile property from
Green Diamond Resource Company. It more than doubles the tribe's land base.
”The Tribe has long sought the return of ancestral land to create a salmon sanctuary and restore tribal cultural management practices, which benefit fish, wildlife and the ecosystem as a whole,” Chairman Thomas O'Rourke said in a
press release.
The tribe used $18.75 million from the
Clean Water State Revolving Fund to buy the land. The
California State Water Resources Control Board supported the transaction.
